You are usually here because

  • A letter from the Utah State Tax Commission or Workforce Services arrived with a penalty on it.
  • Your CPA does the return but said no to payroll, or your payroll app keeps asking you questions you cannot answer.
  • It is Thursday night before payday and you are the one typing hours into a spreadsheet.

Or call (801) 555-0137. Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The detail

Utah specifics, translated

TC-941E is the Utah withholding return: it reports the state income tax you took out of paychecks. Utah has a single flat rate, so the arithmetic is simple and the deadlines are where people get caught. DWS is the Department of Workforce Services, the agency that runs unemployment insurance; every quarter it wants a wage report for each employee, and the contribution is paid by you, not deducted from staff. New-hire reporting goes to the state registry within 20 days of the start date, including rehires and seasonal staff.

Every one of these has a due date and a penalty. We put all of them on our calendar the day you sign up. The full list of forms, agencies and dates is in our Utah payroll taxes guide.

Before you call

Questions owners ask before they call

Not answered here? Call (801) 555-0137 and ask.

01What if the Tax Commission or Workforce Services sends a penalty?

If it is for a period we ran, we handle it: we find out what happened, respond to the agency, and if the error was ours we pay the penalty. If it is for a period before you came to us, we look at the letter with you, usually at no charge, and tell you what it will take to fix.

02Can you take over payroll mid-year?

Yes. Jess collects year-to-date wages and withholding from your current provider so the W-2s come out right, registers any missing state accounts, and runs the next payroll on your existing dates. Most switches take one pay cycle.

03Do you handle tips, commissions and bonuses?

Yes. Tips reported through the point-of-sale flow into payroll for withholding; tip credits for tipped minimum wage are calculated correctly; commissions and bonuses are run as supplemental wages with the right withholding.

04What about contractors?

Contractors are not payroll, but they are our problem too: we collect a W-9 the first time you pay one, keep the file that shows why they are a contractor and not an employee, and file the 1099-NEC in January.

05Do my employees get pay stubs and a portal?

Yes. Pay stubs, W-2s and their own details are in the payroll platform portal. They change their own address or bank account; Jess approves it.
